The Society of Fisheries Technologists(India), established on 29th October, 1962 is a scientific Society of members engaged in research, development, education and policy making related to fisheries. The objective of the Society is to promote the cause of fisheries in general and fisheries technology in particular in all its aspects by providing a forum for fishery technologists connected with:
- Production and processing of fish, design and construction of fishing gear, design of fishing vessels and naval architecture
- Basic research in areas like biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology, nanotechnology in relation to fisheries technology
- Research in social sciences and allied subjects relevant to fisheries technology
- Formulating need based recommendations to policy makers in fisheries, both at the State and Central Government levels by organizing review meetings of scientificresearch in the field of fisheries technology and facilitate exchange of information among members
- Encouraging members of the Society for writing / publishing books in relevant areas
- Organizing national and international seminars, conferences and symposia periodically
- Encouraging original investigations on problems related to fisheries technology
- Publishing a journal “FISHERY TECHNOLOGY”
- Instituting awards for outstanding contributions to the advancement of fisheries and allied areas
